Tuesday AM - How can the Psychological Professions best serve the LGBTQIA+ Community?

An insightful online session as part of Psychological Professions Week 2023 which features people with lived experience, psychological professional insight and those that train those professionals. We have thought provoking and meaningful experiences from members of the LGBTQIA+ communities discussing their experiences of healthcare both positive and negative. During the session there will also be a recorded interview with Dr Jamie Willo. Dr Jamie Willo is the LGBTQ+ gender identity awareness and inclusion training lead for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. They will discuss their journey to developing and facilitating LGBTQ+ and Gender Identity awareness training and their views on how to foster an environment of positive and safe healthcare for people from the LGBTQIA+ communities. Lastly Dr Allàn Laville, Dean for Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Reading, will, in his session, explore what Psychological Professions can do to support the healthcare of LGBTQIA+ communities. Dr Allàn Laville has been the author of several publications including exploring the importance of awareness and understanding for the LGBT+ communities in clinical practice and exploring LGBT mental health and recommendations in clinical practice. He also won the 2019 Reading Student Union Award for Diverse and Inclusive Teaching Excellence.

There has been rapid growth in the number of Psychological Professionals working in the NHS over the last few years and with the Long Term Workforce Plan, this is expected to continue. As part of the Psychological Professions National Conference week this session will celebrate the impact of this growth as well as highlight some of the key challenges that such rapid expansion presents, including implementation of new roles, supervision, and leadership. We hear about innovations in the South West that are aiming to address these challenges and about the implications for the future work of Psychological Professions.

Friday PM - Another 100% growth (!) - The implications and opportunities of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan for a more psychological NHS

This session focusses on what the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan means for the psychological professions, for psychological healthcare, and for the public. It explores how we can continue to achieve the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan to deliver a 60% growth in the psychological professions’ workforce between March 2020 and April 2024, and further build on this as we grow and transform for the benefit of service users, families and carers. By working together, we can seize the opportunity of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan to grow the psychological professions by a further 24,000-26,000 posts by 2037, and to do so safely, effectively and in an integrated way.

This session sets out plans for the next phase of delivery of the psychological professions vision to address the challenges and opportunities of the next five years.

Tuesday PM - Experts by Experience (EBE) in the psychological professions - Adding value and transforming lives.

This is a co-produced and co-delivered session reviewing a range of involvements across the country to share and celebrate how EBEs work in partnership with healthcare staff to enhance learning, practice and to improve healthcare outcomes. Public involvement is a national requirement for the design and delivery of healthcare services and for EBE involvement throughout practitioner psychologist training.

The Psychological Professions Network started in 2013. In the last three years, the network has expanded to include regional networks across England. Membership is now over 10,000 and the PPNs contribute to developments and innovation nationally and regionally. This session outlines the PPN model, provides examples of how the PPN has informed, enabled and influenced the development of the psychological professions and exploring how you can get involved.
