'Mindful Self-Compassion for Aspiring Psychologists' was delivered online by Dr Robert Marx, who is a Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust and Co-Lead at Sussex Mindfulness Centre on 6th December. He spoke to around 40 attendees about mindful self-compassion in the context of working in the NHS.
Dr Marx described some of the history behind the concept, defined the key components of the theory and offered research-backed reasons to try it. Dr Marx followed this with two self-compassion exercises with everyone on the call and allowed space for reflections. It made for a very accessible introduction to the concept, and feedback from some attendees suggests it was a refreshing break in the middle of the working day to undertake a mindfulness-based exercise.
Mindful self-compassion is about responding to challenging life circumstances in a way that combines mindfulness, self-kindness and a recognition of our common humanity. Bringing our awareness to these ideas can remind us to give ourselves what we need and avoid adding self-criticism or other unhelpful stressors to our emotional load.
For aspiring psychologists the focus is often on striving for certain professional milestones and pushing ourselves to get there, so we are grateful for Dr Marx's time in highlighting the role of looking after ourselves in a demanding profession.
