Learning Conference: Engaging Effectively with Lesbian and Bisexual Women

21 Oct 16

The LGBT Foundation’s Women’s Programme invites you to the free learning conference on engaging effectively with lesbian and bisexual women on Tuesday 15th November from 12:00-4:30pm.

‘11% of bisexual women and 8% of lesbians reported that they currently felt severely or extremely anxious compared with 3% of heterosexual women’

‘Just 7% of lesbian and bisexual women reported that they had been given an opportunity to come out by clinicians whilst 40% of lesbian and bisexual women said that healthcare professionals had assumed they were heterosexual’ (Beyond Babies and Breast Cancer, 2013)

Over the past 4 years, LGBT Foundation's Women's Programme has provided dedicated services to over 1000 lesbian and bisexual women across Greater Manchester and has played a key part in raising the visibility of lesbian and bisexual women's needs nationally. Unfortunately, this programme is still one-of-a-kind across the U.K. and therefore it's essential that we work together to ensure lesbian and bisexual women can access the right support when they need it.

Aimed at service providers across all sectors, this free learning conference will support you and your organisation to engage effectively with lesbian and bisexual women. This will be achieved through a series of talks and workshops on communicating in a non-discriminatory way, monitoring sexual orientation, being inclusive of lesbian and bisexual women's needs, targeting messages and developing specialist support for this group.

‘The Women's Programme events have helped me immensely, with self-esteem, confidence and the ability to be comfortable in my own skin and identity’ (Women’s Programme Service User)

Keynote speaker Councillor Bev Craig: Lead Member for LGBT Women at Manchester City Council.

Lunch will be provided from 12:00-12:30.

From 4:30pm-6:00pm there will be a community exhibition with service users and volunteers to celebrate the success of the women's programme, followed by an evening of entertainment from 6:00pm-9:00pm.

Everyone is welcome but please register your place for the learning conference on the event page as places are limited.

If you are not able to attend, please pass this invite onto a relevant colleague.
