New Children and Young People Mental Health Workforce Census Report 2022

25 Jan 23

We are pleased to announce the publication of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health (CYPMH) Workforce Census 2022, which highlights a 5% increase in whole time equivalent (WTE) staff across CYPMH services between 31 March 2021 and 31 March 2022.

The NHS Benchmarking Network was commissioned by Health Education England to conduct this census of the NHS and Non-NHS CYPMH workforce across England at the 31 March 2022. The results of the census will enable us to work collaboratively with key strategic partners to inform the development of education, workforce planning/transformation and investment. Whilst also supporting the ambitions of the NHS Long Term Plan and the increasing need and demand following COVID-19.

The 2022 census reports a total of 21,643 WTE staff in post across all CYPMH sectors. This is a 45.7% growth on the 14,857 WTE CYPMH staff reported at the 2018 census point of the 31 December 2018, pre-NHS Long Term Plan.

We would like to extend our thanks to all our colleagues and partners who have contributed to the development of this report, for working with us to deliver this workforce growth and for your ongoing determination to ensure we improve access to services and outcomes for children and young people across England.

We look forward to continuing to work with the NHS Benchmarking Network and partners to produce the 2023 census.
